Hey guys,

I'm in Vancouver, Canada, and want to get a hitch installed on my 2020 Outback Outdoor edition. My goal is to tow a small 12 foot aluminum boat.

Subaru is quoting me at $971 dollars, installed. I've been talking to neighbors about options and they suggested I purchase an aftermarket one and get it installed by a third party. What are your thoughts on this?

Does anyone have any experience with this hitch in particular?

Thanks for the comment. Do these come with the wiring kits necessary for trailers that have breaks?

By the way, the one on etrailers.com may be 20 bucks cheaper, but they want nearly 100 bucks to ship it here. The one from hitchweb is free shipping, since they are Canadian.

$961 to get a hitch installed is absolutely ridiculous. Depending on how handy you are with tools, it's so much easier to install a hitch yourself and get a good quality hitch for a lot less money than that. I personally bought a stealth hitch and I like it a lot because you can't even tell that there's a hitch on the car when You are not towing anything.

Very happy with my Curt. I have the T-one harness which I just transferred over from my last car. Works fine. Edit: also, how much does carid.com want to ship it to canada? They were the cheapest by far when I was looking.

Yes, many of us here have done self instalations of that Curt hitch and wireing harness. Total cost when I bought mine ( with the same T-one harness @rfuree11 mentions above) from Etrailer was about $200 US. ( My dealer quoted me $796) It's a great setup and the install was not hard at all. There are several threads relating to the Curt including this one:

That harness should work but I have no experience with it. CARID and Etrailer are popular here for state side buyers but shop whereever you get the best deal/ feal comfortable. Don't forget to order the hitch cover and ball mount while your at it.

@Frogwise

I bought the Curt 56040 on Amazon. The harness plugs directly into the harness as well. What it requires is a dedicated grounding point. However, what I discovered on etrailer is that the Curt harness provides a lil more power to the lights than other ones. See here.

You can see my posting on the Curt Hitch installation thread here.

When I bought the hitch, I used the Curt Website to look for a local hitch dealer in Canada and bought it there. Was much cheaper than online at the time. Paid $230 (before tax). Because I bought it from the local dealer they were really helpful when it came to purchasing a ball mount and ball for the hitch after I installed it.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

One more question regarding the actual ball mount - do you recommend a ball mount with a rise or a drop for the Outback? And how far should it extend out from the hitch? Or does all this depend on the trailer?

Depends on the trailer. I generally run something with 4" rise but there are folks here that run up too 2-3" drop. You want your trailer to be generally level. ( and this gets more important as trailer weight goes up.) Check out the towing thread in the sticky section and you can get an idea.
