Found a few YouTube videos on this, tried it, and lo' and behold, it works! My '05 XT has been idling low/rough, but never stalled. The procedure worked like a charm! My question: does this process need to be done each time the battery is disconnected?
TIA!

Yes, but I wonder if it’s starting to self correct. Is that a thing? Thanks for the advice & I’ll repost there.
Probably not unless the ECU was reset. This tends to happen on Gen 3 when the battery is disconnected. The relearn idle helps get it back in range.

Here's another idle re-learn video.

For push button start it's the same thing but here's where key vs keyless are different:

Key in accessory mode (first click as you turn it)
Keyless with feet off any pedals, press start button once
Key in ON mode (second click as you turn it)
Keyless with feet off any pedals, press start button twice
Key in START position (turn key all the way and engine cranks)
Keyless foot on brake press start button.

This week and last week I tried to reset the idle using the attached video instructions. The car still stalls when I put on the lights and heater fan or lights and seat warmers. It runs fine with the everything off. The video says to not have any lights on or electrical load on the system during the reset. The daytime running lights are on when the car is in park. Is there a way to turn them off? Should the engine be at operating temperature before going through the procedure?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Looks like the person disconnected the positive terminal in that video, which is not best practice. I've reset the ECU in my '06 OBXT (whether disconnecting battery or via Cobb AP) and generally let it idle a minute or two after restart, then drive it. Never have had any issues with idle quality after that. I wonder what the 'offical' Subaru procedure is.

It's in the 2009 Owners Manual. Page 3-47.

If you don't have the Owners Manual, then a .pdf version can be downloaded from Subaru at https://techinfo.subaru.com/stis/#/login without having to pay or register with the site. Click on Online Reference, and on the next page click on Owner Manual at the left, and select Model Year, Model/Carline, Trim (all drop-down menus), and then click On Search. The next page will list the available documents, one of which is 2006 Legacy and Outback Owners Manual. Click on the blue "down" arrow at the right to download.

I went through the relearn procedure again with the DTL off and it seems to have worked. I did a test drive with the lights on, heater fan on and seat warmers on. It ran well. I stopped twice with the transmission in gear and everything on and it didn't stall. I hope it stays that way. This is my wife's car and it doesn't get driven daily.

Thanks for everyone's help.
