JDM projectors vs HID projector retrofit? Which way to go?

Obviously the headlights suck. Just wondering how the headlight output of the JDM headlights compares to a HID projector retrofit.

Cost wise, it's about the same. I'm finding a projector kit that is complete for $210 shipped. JDM headlights are $160 plus $50 for shipping or so.

Obviously the retrofit projector route, I'd need to pull the lens apart to install. But it's basically plug and play after that.

The JDM headlight route, I'd need to change all the wiring over, which is easy enough, but does require soldering(yes, I could use crimp connectors. But I like things to last, and not halfass projects).

Just wondering what other people are doing?

Not that it really matters, but car is a 99 manual outback, with I think the winter/cold weather package.

Either option requires pulling the housing apart. The retrofit (I assume you mean a proper one?) also requires a lot of care to make sure the projector is mounted solid and on the proper plane to allow aiming. The JDM units have entirely wrong cutoff, so fixing that properly will be a major pain (haven't seen it done in a way I would find acceptable). I know of a lighting option that no-one seems to be doing here, that would allow much better lighting - and be legal. But everyone seems obsessed with "teh JDMnesss", so...

Hate to say this, but you could always get the HID conversion for 9007 bulbs off Amazon for like $60-70. People are going to give you crap cause your Halogen lenses aren't built for Bi-Xenon whatever the heck blah blah blah but it does improve the lights and it looks kinda cool. Also they run less power so nice on your alternator. And Bi-Xenon's last a heck of a lot longer than halogens.

What I did on my lights was adjust them up using the little screws on the back. People are going to give you crap about this too but if you do it correctly you won't blind people with your low beams and your highs will shoot a lot farther. After using the 3M clearing stuff on my lights and adjusting them up to throw farther they are 1,000,000 times better.

Option #3 Get some sick 55W Hella driving lights and stick em on your bumper rally style. Those are nice too.

I don't care about it being JDM or not honestly, the stock light output sucks.

To clarify, I'd be using the JDM headlights with regular halogen bulbs, no hid for them. I'm told they're better then the stock USDM headlights.

And yes, when I go HID, I go complete mini projector, non of that glare the **** out of the opposing driver driver crap.

I find that LEO's honestly could give a **** provided you have a proper projectors, and aren't just throwing HID bulbs in there.

Cale- I did a google search, found some on various websites and ebay. $160 + $50 shipped was the average of the ones I found.

Tipper- I'm going the non-glare to other drivers route. I'd prefer not to just throw HID's in there when there is a better option. Doing so will for sure get you pulled over, and scrutiny upon your car. Same goes for pointing the lights higher up. I have mixed opinion on driving lights honestly, I usually add a small light bar, and have it come on with the high beams.

In Japan, they drive on the wrong side of the road,
and headlamp beam patterns are NOT symmetrical,
so JDM ain't gonna work in North America.

I guess your best option of those two would be a proper retrofit projector in a new housing. Your old housings will have a clouded/hazed lense, which is really where the biggest part of your problem is right now. A proper restore of your existing lenses would buy you a few years life out of them, but if you're going to all the trouble of properly installing a retrofit, it makes sense to start with new lenses.

I haven't decided where to buy the projectors at, I find them for a an excellent price on aliexpress, but they don't have the support of the US companies, like The Retrofit Source, even though that is where they source all their parts from, markup and resell.

I'm looking into seperate high and low beams as well, or perhaps bi-xenons as well as high beams, bi-xenons and a light bar for high, I dunno.

Buying new lights is an option that I have looked into, though honestly looking at the quality of the aftermarket lights leaves much to be desired. TYC is the best out there, but they are such thin plastic on the lens and body I think I'll stick with a second set of lights.

There are a couple good posts on here and other sites, HIDPlanet for example, that detail how to remove the lines molded into the headlight, apply a UV resistant sealer, etc.
