I got the same bulbs as the ones for the trunk lights. I know they are much brighter but I haven't installed them yet

Your post reminded me that I had a single spare of one of these bulbs leftover from my cargo light upgrade. I went out and did a quick install on one BU light to compare it to the LED Ebay bulbs I had installed a few weeks. Results: These are brighter than the Ebay bulb (by quite a bit ) and those were much brighter than factory.)

I normally wouldn't, but the heavy privacy glass tinting in the rear window makes it necessary to have a brighter backup light. The stock reverse bulbs are so dim that I can only see out the back when I press the brakes. That really pushed me to get the brighter lights. I don't think brake lights should be brighter than reverse lights. Now my reverse lights are bright but not blindingly so - it's brighter than the brake lights, as it should be.

I just did the replacement and wrote about it here:

Over all, I am pretty happy so far. I will check again at night but I can tell the difference even in bright sunlight.

Not to detract from the LED backup focus on this thread. But the side marker bulbs on the rear corner (per manual; rear side marker lights (Outback) 12 V-5 W W5W.

i suspect based on the brands you guys used such as ibrightstar, Auxito, DiodeDynamics etc that a W5W bulb from them would work.

My question is should you buy the W5W bulb in a red colored led or is white ok?
I don't want the side marker to look washed out due to a white bulb.

it's a small enough light that it's not going to make much difference in a side marker location. The oem bulb isn't red tinted (although the output isn't the same color temperature as most LED replacements). If you want the closest to stock, find a LED that's in a color temperature range of the incandescent bulb (or very close).

I just stuck the same thing I was using for the license plate lights.

Had these in my '17 maxima - they were awesome. No idea on how well they would perform in our vehicle.

I've had mixed results with morimoto - most have been fine but I did have a set of LED headlights that burnt out after 6 months

I tried the following from Amazon (click on links):

Holoco 6000k LED
Shuyee 6000k LED
iBrightStar LED
Xinyang 6500k LED (spoiler alert, this is the one to get)

Each is a different format for how the LEDs are arranged. I originally bought the Holoco for reverse lights and the Shuyee for the interior cargo light. I was a bit disappointed with the Holoco as the pattern wasn't very good and it wasn't all that much brighter than the OEM bulb.

For laughs I put the Shuyee in. Despite it rated on paper as a lot less lumens than Holoco the pattern was better and it appeared brighter. That's when it occurred to me it was more important to have light coming out 360 degrees from the "bulb" rather than focused out the back like the Holoco.

To hedge my bets, I ordered the iBrightStar and Xinyang. My concern with iBrightStar was the lens creating a hotspot and an inferior light pattern similar to the Holoco. For those that have the iBrightStar this is a fine option but to my eyes the Xinyang was better. It produced the most even light pattern and was overall brighter. I believe the reflector is at it's best when it has a light source that mimics an incandescent as closely as possible since that's what it was designed for. In my opinion the Xinyang is as close as you can get.

Considering the Xinyang is $8 for four, it's a great deal. Even if two fail I have spares. There's my 2 cents....

I tried two different back up bulbs, one that looked like a paddle and one that had 360 degree LED's. I originally had the paddle shaped one and switched to the 360 one with the idea that it would better mimic a halogen but after changing just one side and comparing them, the paddle shaped one was superior in this case so I put the paddle shaped one back in.
