"Flip the mechanical button by the handle (not the button on the panel with the window buttons) when you get out, then close the door. If you leave your fob in the car, you are locked out unless you set a tailgate pin number."

DID THAT, CANNOT GET INTO THE CAR.
ITS IDLING ON THE STREET.
I FLIPPED THE MECHANICAL BUTTON, HAVE THE FOB IN MY POCKET.
THE DOOR HANDLE SENSOR JUST EMITS A 30 SEC BEEP
THE FOB BUTTON DOES NOT UNLOCK THE DOOR

Yeah, and your fob should have the mechanical key inside of it, just pop it out (press the little metal square in while pulling at the split ring).

As I believe is mentioned in the thread you've quoted - this is something you should first try with the window open so you're sure you'll be able to get back in. Sorry, I know it's not helpful now, but just to be sure others don't make the same mistake.

I'll bet that was me being quoted. Yes, I said test with the window open, but even that might not be a guarantee of future success. Suppose it worked, then you forgot you left a fob in the car and that prevented you from getting back in with the fob. Situations like this is why I lube my lock and operate it with the mechanical key at least once per year. Your alarm may go off when you get the door open.

EDIT - OK it wasn't me who mentioned opening the window in that thread - it was someone else. I said it in another thread, and yes, I did say that I was able to unlock the doors with the fob away from the car by using the app. I have no idea what level of subscription service you need for door locks, but I have that.

I am confused by the original post. You quote, im assuming someone else, talking about leaving keys in the car. But then go on to say you have the key fob in your pocket. So how are you locked out? Im confused. Have you tried this key thats INSIDE the fob?

This happened to me a few weeks ago on our 2023 TXT. The app didn't work. My key fob didn't work, the door handle didn't work either.

I signed out of the app. Signed back in, and as soon as I was logged in the locks popped.

I know I could have used the key on the key fob. That would have been the easy out. I was trying to figure out what in God's name was going on first. Subaru tells me it's known issue. I call that BS. From now on, if I have to step out of the car while it's in park and running the door stays open or the glass is down.

Just came across this discussion looking for a solution. I had a similar situation with my new 2024 Outback Onyx XT addition. This may only reflect a few owners but I'm really aggravated. I actually have an appointment today for my first service.
My Outback has locked me out of my vehicle on different occasions with different scenarios. About two months of ownership I scheduled an appointment with the Oncore program representative that goes over functions and features and any issues or concerns you may have.
I mentioned to the rep that my vehicle was locking but had managed to get back inside.
He went through my settings and assured me that as long as I kept the fob in my pocket while walking away that it would never lock. Well not to long after I had a situation.
One evening I backed out of my driveway and remembered I needed my wallet. Assuming my Outback would stay unlocked as all the doors were currently unlocked. I shut the door and walked away and heard the audible beeps. I returned a few minutes later and all doors had locked. Pulled the key fob out and hit the unlock and nothing. Walked over to the passenger side with no luck. Then I thought low battery and went back inside to retrieve my second fob and same results. Pulled out the metal key to open the driver's door manually and still no luck. At the this point I'm angry and frustrated. It's late and cars is still running. Last resort was the My Subaru app. Logged in and the app freezes. I log out and log back in two to three times because the app immediately logs me out and requires me to log back in. Discouraged and puzzledafter 4-5 attempts I finally look inside at my dash and there is a message that states "Key Fob Undetectable". I'm swearing at this point! I take a moment and decide to restart my phone and log back in and.... Nothing! Take another moment and uninstall and reinstall the app which finally allows me to log in which simultaneously make the message disappear off the dash infotainment screen. Doors finally unlock through the app!!!
Hopefully today the dealership has some answers and if they question it then I will show them the video I took that night during the whole process. Hopefully they have a solution.

it shouldn't matter how you lock the door, but the car shouldn't lock when a key fob is in the car. It will still beep at you but should be a series of 5 beeps telling you something isn't right.
You can manually lock the doors and leave it running. I've locked my teen in the car with the AC on because he didn't want to run into the store.

Sounds like your battery went dead in the fob or lost communication with the car. Like others have suggested, you can pop the "key" out of the fob and manually unlock the door with it. I've had to do that when my fob went dead without warning.

I appreciate the feedback... In the vehicle locked position I can almost feel it wanting to pass that point but I have broken keys while receiving similar feedback. While in the vehicle unlock position it will not budge at all to try to lock.
What's crazy is that my Outback is literally 4 months old and its 75 degrees outside.
I'm just going to make an appointment and call it a day.
There is also something rattling that seems to be coming from somewhere behind the dash or could be resonating from the engine bay which has progressively gotten a little louder.
Hopefully I do not sound like I'm going overboard or overthinking the issues I have with my Outback.
I was previously a SubĂ WRX owner which was pretty much flawless. And I really think this Outback is Awesome!

PIN access does not function when the car is running.

As per the manual:
"You cannot unlock by PIN Code Access in the following cases:
- When the access key fob is within the operating ranges
- When the ignition switch is in the “ACC” or “ON” position"

I swear I posted how I finally go into the car... guess I didnt', and now I don't remember. The advice to use the lock a couple times a year seems good, maybe fill it up with lithium grease? Don't want to use WD-40 or alcohol un-freeze because that dissolves the OEM grease, whatever it is.
