Hey all - I'm looking to replace the piano black shift lever on my 2020, curious if anyone has done it that could tell me how its removed? I've looked online and through some other forums but nothing came up. Thanks in advance!

It is easy. Just need to pry down the trim ring on the shifter boot and pull a clip.

Using a plastic panel tool, push/slide down the collar for the flexible boot under the Shifter Knob. This exposes the U clip that holds the Shifter Knob to the shaft. The U clip can easily be slid out towards the dash with just your fingers. The Shifter Knob then comes straight up and off.

Does anyone have the part # for the cover? Thought I saw it in another thread a while back, but search didn’t find it. If part is ”cheap” enough, I’d like to get one and play with xpel or similar. That way if I like it, I’d swap them. At very least, I have a replacement for down the line. Thank.👍

If I’m looking at the parts list above correctly, it’s 92122F in the diagram. Subaru part # 92126AN00A. That # crosses to all versions of the 2020 Outback and also the Legacy.
Anyone see something different there? Was going to look into ordering one this week.
TIA to all for the help, Ron.

That part number is correct. I just ordered one online and had I'm having it shipped to my local dealer. The website had me put in my VIN to make sure I received the correct cover. If you really want to make sure that you get the right one you can always call your dealer and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help you out. The folks at my dealer have always been kind.

Awesome!!! Thank you(y)(y)(y)
Definitely will want to verify those... the line drawings aren’t great... it’s really hard to tell, and the one part you linked to only shows up on the diagrams for the base trim, nothing corresponding on the other trims. The more I look the more confusing it gets.

Talking with a parts department person would help.

One way to check might be to take yours off and see if any trim pieces have part numbers.

I'd consider vinyl wrapping too, I didn't feel like the xpel went far enough back. Downside is I have to use the dash to know the gear.

Nice. Yeah I ordered $10 clear vinyl from amazon, hopefully that works and it's cheap.

And I definitely ordered the incorrect part, so I'll be talking to the parts department to find the 100% correct number. I'll post on here when I get it sorted out, but I think that Walker may be onto something.

I really couldn't tell from the line drawings - I checked other assemblies from other years with the assembly numbers in the parts listing (some had pictures, you can search places like ebay and look at pictures) - usually if it's shiny or an alternate color (like a matte silver, etc) and has shifter indicator markings on it, it's part of the shift indicator, and the cover piece is usually some contrasting trim... but that cover can contain things like the parking brake buttons, seat heater switches, etc.

Below is my guesstimate (haven' actually seen any parts, so I can't say for sure):

The base model is two separate parts, a cover (matte) with a small window cut into it where the shift indicator on the shift control part pokes through, the inner trim ring is integrated (matte black).

The piano black ones don't have a top cover and it's different large integrated top surface. The difference for the XT/touring would be the cutout in that larger integrated top cover for the front camera. To trim the edges, there is a separate trim ring (even though it lists as used for the base model, I believe that is a mistake in the part applicability).

So... parts list:
Base is two pieces
  • 92126AN01A - panel cover shift lever (integral trim ring)
  • 35170AN01A - Automatic Transmission Shift Indicator (Silver)
where the piano black ones are one piece:
  • 35179AN01A - Automatic Transmission Shift Indicator (premium and limited)
  • 35179AN00A - Automatic Transmission Shift Indicator (onyx and touring)
the one piece do have a small thin trim ring, but it is not a big cover.
  • 92161AN01A - Ring Indicator. Ring Cover. (Front)

Figure 930-2 helps show this
501142

base model with window for the shift control indicators to show through (top cover, smaller shift control). Top cover has integrated trim ring (?)
501140

touring/xt with larger shift control top - no separate top cover because it's a larger shaped part. Silver trim ring is separate.

Could also be some parts aren't listed, left out, and so on.

Totally agree with you. Once I took apart the indicator, there was a plastic piece underneath and it had a cut out for the camera button. I just got back from the dealership and they ordered the correct part for me. Walker your parts specified above are correct. As I have the Limited, my part number was 35179AN01A.
