The voice prompts using Apple Maps / apple car play are no longer working.
I've set Subaru infotainment voice navigation volume to 20.
0n my iPhone 15 pro (running iOS 17) in settings for maps I've set voice volume to "louder".
Still no joy.
Help!

You might go into the settings for Navigation (or Sound - I can't remember which menu it's under) and check if the NAV volume has changed to 0 or close to 0. Additionally, on the NAV screen itself, there is an icon of a speaker; if it has a line through it, it is muted. I hope this info helps. . . .

I was having the same problem with Apple Maps on my 2024 Limited XT. Used to work just fine, and Waze has no problem sending audio directions. On my iPhone SE 2022, under Spoken Directions, I have enabled "Louder Volume," "Directions Pause Spoken Audio," and "Directions Wake Device." I tried enabling "Directions on Radio" for a while, but that didn't help so I disabled it. All the Outback settings were correct, too.

And then I stumbled on the solution. I tried using Apple Maps while not even sitting in my car and it STILL wasn't providing spoken directions through the PHONE. I noticed a little speaker icon on the right of the screen with an exclamation mark in a triangle. I tapped the icon and realized there are three choices, which according to Apple mean the following:

Hence my phone was set to "Only driving alerts," but I don't remember even getting them. So I tapped on the "All directions are spoken" icon and it fixed everything, both on the phone and in my Outback. Not sure how it got switched from "All directions" to "Only driving alerts," but I'll chalk it up to user error. With all the electronic gizmos on this vehicle they seem inevitable. 😂 I've turned off as many of them as I could, but still.....

Another "setting" that nobody tells you:
When all else fails, when you are expecting a direction (eg: Turn right now), turn up the volume knob.
I found out that you can ONLY adjust the actual voice directions volume while she is speaking.
This worked on Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze for me, and was the only thing that worked, after spending hours in settings for all of the above.
Again, mash the volume knob on the infotainment system while the directions are being given. It won't affect the volume of anything other than the navigation voice.

I'm having the exact same symptoms with Android Auto on my '23 Onyx OB. And I've already investigated all the solutions given previously, to no avail. In addition, the built-in Subie voice control neither talks nor listens to me. Lightly press the voice button on the steering wheel and the radio goes quiet, the voice control dialog appears on the screen, and the system waits for my command. When I ask her to "navigate," she just waits like I haven't said anything. She appears to be asking me to say something, until she gives up, but neither of us can hear the other.

[And no remarks about analogies to marriage!]

And then I stumbled on the solution. I tried using Apple Maps while not even sitting in my car and it STILL wasn't providing spoken directions through the PHONE. I noticed a little speaker icon on the right of the screen ... I found the sound icon on Apple Car Play, but I did not see it until I entered a search location in Apple Maps on the Infotainment screen and pushed "Go." Once I found it, as "dogboy" said, it was easy to configure the app to play voice navigation instructions.

I addition to using the volume buttons (radio or steering wheel) while a particular type of audio prompt is playing, you can also adjust the various audio prompt volumes in Settings|Sound. If you go in to settings, and find that any of the audio prompt volumes are set to zero, change them to non-zero and re-try your operation. It's not entirely clear to me which type(s) of audio prompt(s) is/are used by CP/AA, so don't make any assumptions and change any/all zero values to non-zero.
