From what I have seen it's how it mounts to the car. The other bars mount using stock bumper beam mounting location/bolt holes. The Subaru hitch mounts from brackets that slide into the "frame rails". Those brackets are secured from underneath and then the brackets connect to the hitch assembly. It may just be that this method gives you more tongue weight capacity and/or towing capacity.
I'm talking about the drawbar, (2" sq that goes into the hitch), not the hitch mount. Why does Subaru get $90 for this?

Scenario: Trailer to be towed needs the top of the ball of the hitch to be 17" above the ground in order for the trailer to tow level. Trailer tongue weight is 275 pounds.

OEM hitch height? For the OEM hitch, how many inches above the ground is the top of the ball when the vehicle is unloaded? With 275 pounds of tongue weight on the hitch, how many inches above the ground is the top of the ball (i.e., how much does the top of the hitch ball sag when loaded)?

Hitch risers? Are hitch risers available for the OEM receiver, OEM or otherwise? Would after-market hitch drawbars be compatible? For example, could a Curt drawbar be slid into the OEM receiver and be attached securely?

In Subaru parlance, the part is called the ball mount ( L101SAN200 ). The part does not come with the ball. I assume this is what you are referring to?

The rectangular section is solid metal. The weight is 25-30 lbs. I bought a non OEM ball ( 2" ).

The hole is 1" in diameter. Most balls have lock washers that are slightly under 1" so as the nut is tightened, the lock washer will move into the hole and be totally ineffective. I purchased a 3/4 in. x 2 in. washer from Amazon which worked perfectly:

The Subaru ball mount fits the hitch snugly, which reduces the "hitch slap" noise.

Hope this helps ...

I am considering the Curt hitch for my 2020 OB. Read a bunch of reviews about misaligned holes and flanges but they weren't necessarily installed on Outbacks. I'm wondering if you could post or reply about how your install went.
It took my local trailer shop less than 40 minutes to install, including cutting the lower facia. The installer told me that it's one of the easier installs he does. It looks great.

I didn’t have any trouble installing mine. Everything lined up perfectly. It took me a little under an hour to install.

Just an interesting observation regarding the new Outback Wilderness... apparently it will have a special piece with a cutout for the hitch rather than the cutting that we have needed to do thusfar.

I just installed the OEM hitch. Pretty straight forward install. Most difficult part was actually cutting the rear bumper. I was able to cut about 3/4" less than the template that was included with the hitch. I ended up throwing away the plastic bumper trim and get a better one from amazon. It fits better and looks better IMO.

Do you have a link to what you bought on Amazon?

I saw a 2021 OB on my dealer's lot this past Saturday with the OEM hitch installed. It's nice to see that you can get a 2" receiver on a Subaru from the factory. For 'generations' all you could get was a 1.25" hitch, which is why I've always gone aftermarket. I took pics of the underbody cutout. I guess it's the only way to install/remove a hitch pin, especially if you use an anti-rattle type and have to also get a wrench and lock up under their blindly.

Nice write-up, OP!

One question: I know it must be just a photo artifact, but why does this look like a frame rail fracture?

Thanks for the feedback :)

There is another piece of stamped sheet metal that goes over the frame rail and the shadows and light looks like it's cracked.
