Outback or 4Runner ?

Ok...I am seriously thinking of treating myself to a new vehicle as a retirement gift. My financial guy said "go ahead, live a little", so I feel a bit better because he always tries to talk me out of things ! Ha
I currently have a 2019 Outback 3.6R Limited with 16,000 miles on it.
I am considering 2 vehicles:
1) 2021 Outback Touring XT
2) 2020 or 21 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Rd Premium

Now I know all the obvious off road benefits and drawbacks. I do get that the 4Runner is considered a true off-road vehicle and the Outback is more family vehicle etc.
But I still struggle to decide. I do spend about 3-4 weeks a year in the mountains and on dirt/gravel roads.
My main questions surround day to day driving on suburban roads and interstates that are plowed (but often not completely). Icy and periodic snowpacked roads are the norm.

1) Which vehicle would you rather have for D2D driving in typical Minnesota winter type conditions ? (I have 17" Wildpeaks on my Subi and would keep those when trading).
2) Is that 4 turbo as good (or better) than the 3.6R ? The Toyota 6 is a beast that lasts and lasts...so I get that.
3) Given gas mileage diffs, price, ride etc etc.....if money were no object, which would you choose ?

1. I would rather drive the 4Runner in a Minnesota winter.
2. Not sure the 2.4T really has enough history to make a valid comparison to the 3.6.
3. Money not an object, I would buy the 4Runner TRD.

Now retired you might find yourself spending more time exploring the mountains.

6th gen 4runner is coming out in 2021 as a 2022 model. I would wait to see what that has to offer, unless there's a particular reason why you can't wait a little longer.

The Ford Bronco is another possibility to consider in that timeframe.

Subaru is also going to come out with a "wilderness edition" Outback - nobody knows what that will entail.

mountains and other places to explore , something with low range and maybe one locker ...if just go on normal tracks then subaru will be enough

Like someone mentioned earlier, I think the Tundra is much better than the 4Runner. It has a very good, powerful 32v V8 motor and has the TRD Off Road package. I would keep the '19 3.6 OB and get a new Tundra TRD Pro.

Really good question I own both vehicles here's my take:
Drive both! give them both a good work out!!!
Here is a really good comparison that is quite comprehensive giving the nod to the outback but with several important caveats; Towing, etc. 2019 Subaru Outback vs. 2019 Toyota 4Runner: Which is Best?

I bought my wie the Outback but when the time comes, I'll probably get the Toyota for me. PS you can save a lot of money going with the Tacoma rather than the 4runner.

I own both. Go with the 4 runner. They’re trouble fee unlike Subaru

As much as I prefer Turbo cars, in this case your 2019 3.6 is wise to keep and maybe get something fun. STI? C8 Corvette would be fun!

Ford is supposedly testing a badlands with manual trans

But none of those were a C8. Fortunately the sole '83 in the world was not among those destroyed.

My wife and I have been married 20 years and I’ve always had a new 4runner and she has always had a new Outback. Because retirement is around the corner for her, (I’m there), we bought a Tundra and decided to downsize. We sold the 4runner as it was worth more than we paid for our 16 Trails 4runner and I like the gas mileage and the turbo. I’m putting a skid plate on the Suby and already put Wildpeak on it. We live in the Rockies and it has been great for us in every way. Oslo has to ride in the backseat but it seems to work.
