I have a 2005 outback H4 non turbo and when I fill up on gas it has trouble starting. Did some research and it seems like the Purge Valve but I can't seem to find a solid answer were is it located. Some people were saying it's under the intake manifold and others over the passenger back wheel.

purge and vent valves:
such things usually make a check engine code,

on rare occasions over many years with various cars I have had problems filling. never did anything to fix it. as it just went away on its own.

suggestion for the short term. slower filling (as you are probably doing). or picking a different gas station.

______

you can check for codes like this on a US spec 2005, if one ever crops up. (may take a couple tries to work,...but works better then hand helds).

The symptom described can happen when the purge valve, which is supposed to be closed when the engine is off, remains open or at least has some leakage. This allows fuel tank fumes being pushed out by the incoming fuel to be passed to the intake manifold when the tank is being filled. This is all the more so if, as mentioned, the charcoal canister drain valve isn't open. (It should be open but it's not uncommon for it, or the hose from it, to become blocked).

. . . I can't seem to find a solid answer were is it located. Some people were saying it's under the intake manifold and others over the passenger back wheel.
Is the car emission system CA-spec or Fed-spec? The location of the purge valve differs. On the CA spec, with the ignition coil on top of the intake manifold, it's slightly back of and down below the cylinder 4 high voltage tower on the coil. (In other words, it's below the back of the intake manifold.) On the Fed spec (coil on the back of the left side of the intake manifold), it's also under the intake manifold, but at the front, slightly to the left. It has two hoses and an electrical connector.

But, as noted, even if the purge valve is isn't sealing properly, the symptom could very well be a combination of faults.

There's a number of threads here about the same symptoms.

The code is indicating a leak in the fuel tank/fume recovery system. It could be caused by any number of faults, including malfunctioning canister drain valve or purge valve. It requires some further diagnosis.

Some diagnostic tools, such as the Dealers Subaru Select Monitor, can activate individual relays relays and solenoids to enable the technician to listen or test for proper operation. However, if something like the purge valve is leaking when it should be closed, this test approach will not necessarily identify the bad valve, as it could still operate electro/mechanically.

@relative4 suggested a test which could reveal an opening where there shouldn't be one.

Bump. So I bought a 06 outback sw. 2.5i non turbo. I get the p1443 code. I changed the purge vavle? These bolted to the front of the intake. When I started car and used my FixD code reader it said no codes. 10 miles later same code popped up. Where is the vent control vavle. I think I'm saying that right. Oh also the car sat for a year before I got it from an older couple said the did regular maintenance but you know how that goes. This code is driving me up the walls. It's my first car and I don't wanna mess it up. So visual aids or links to the correct part would be awesome. I ha e researched but I don't really know what I'm looking for
