I am getting the 2014 Outback and had 2 questions.

1. Can both monitors play(display) the same single DVD.

2. Can you have the audio play through the stereo system instead of using the headphones?

Hi,

I actually just had the same question #2 and called dealership yesterday to talk to their audio guru!

1) yes, you can choose which DVD from either player to play on both. So, you can have two kids watching two different movies or both watching the same DVD (from either unit).

2) Guru's response: no. The head units are standalone units and in no way connected to the car's audio.

I have the DVD/NAV unit as well, and you can't display a DVD from there to the two head units.

I'm hoping to find a way to have audio from the head units in the car's speakers. Maybe those FM transmitters connected to the units?

BUT, I read somewhere that if you have XM Radio (which I also have but never use), XM uses the same audio input so it's either XM or Head Unit, and not both. I'm going to the dealership and talk to them in person because even the Head Units' remote shows an option for Car Audio!!

Thanks for your reply. We currently also have a Honda CRV which has wireless headphones and it can use the radio. We hit the FM button on the radio to go to FM2 and then there is a button on the remote that we hit and it tunes to a specific station. We turn to that station to hear it. If it's not clear, we hit the tuner button again and it displays another station on the LCD display and we turn the radio to that station. I wonder if the Outback works the same way. It would be nice it if did. Our little ones do not like to wear headphones.

Actually, the system does work through the car audio but the sound is poor. Making the displays show the same movie is a breeze.

But although it has proven super useful, purchasing it was a mistake. A couple of ipads and/or a simple over the headrest video system for long trips would provide a lot more bang for the money.

So, yeah, runs well and there are no cables around, not to mention that one of the kids cannot do ipad games while travelling without a risk of throwing up the breakfast, which does not happen with the video. But a very expensive option. After bergaining on the car, add it, and get them to shave quite a few hundred dollars, if you feel you really need it.

Well, my dealer uses Best Buy for install. There is a short cable in the center console that plugs right in there, next to the 12v outlet.

The solution is very elegant, but the car sound is poor and sometimes tricky to get going (has to be in AUX). It is just ok for things like Thomas the Tank Engine, but for anything more demanding sound-wise it would probably cause earache...
