Tie Rods (Rocky Mounts) Install and Impressions

I have to say, after owning yakima and thule, that these are some really great bike racks.

I called Rocky Mounts directly last Saturday while my car was getting an oil change at the dealer. They picked up IN PERSON on the third ring. They were super helpful and really knew their stuff. I got 2 tie rods in silver and 4 lock cores all shipped for $5. UPS didnt pick up there on Sat so they shipped on Mon. Made it to my door in TN on Thur. I called them back on Monday at lunch time b/c I forgot to ask for a tracking number. Again, they picked up in very short time directly and without having to go through and awful phone tree. I shot me an email with the tracking number withing 5 min. What a great buying experience.


20 min to install and they work great. I have at least 3 inches or more of clearance from the back of the tailgate to the tray - which the guy on the phone said wouldn't be an issue, and he was right. He seemed to be really knowledgable of the 2010 Outback and he really put me at ease. As my kiddo gets a little older and gets a bike I am not going to hesitate to buy a 3rd tray. There is a more wind noise than without the racks (to be expected) but when you close the sunroof cover it about takes it all away. I am interested to see how it changes the gas mileage. This is a daily driver and goes about 110 miles a day.

Thanks for posting those shots. After seeing how smooth those look up on the roof I looked online and found that they've got a lot of sweet color combos. I was all set to get Yakima pitchforks, but these look a lot better.

I found them for $108 at orsracksdirect.com and it looks like they've got all the colors available. I checked out pricepoint as recommended above, but they've only got black, red and silver. I'm thinking about red, blue, or yellow for my black OB.

These just moved to the top of my want list for my Subie.

BTW, I'm waiting for my 1st gen iPhone to die too so I can go get the 4G.

Thanks for the heads up! I wanted blue but was going to settle for red from Price Point, but thanks to you, I just ordered my blue Tie Rod from ORS.

Great deal! I might just forget the hitch and get rid of my Thule Doubletrack altogether!

That's awesome - glad to see I could use the internet for good instead of spreading porn laden viruses all over the place.

Let me know if you get an email in the next day or so regarding if it's in stock or not. I had that happen once with them - the order was placed for my FatCat 6 ski racks and was told a day or so later that it was on back order. They were great with communication on my order.

BTW - does anyone know if the red is bright red or more of a maroon ruby red? I'm debating between the blue and red to go on my black OB. If it's bright, I'm going with the blue but if it's a deeper red, I'm going red. Different websites make the colors look different.

Still hoping more people have pics to share. Because they're not as popular as Thule and Yakima, it's hard to find pics of them on actual cars.

My only complaint (as you can see from the last picture) is that because of the curve of the crossbar, the rack is tilted and the bike is not perfectly vertical. Does anyone else with this (or any other roof carrier) have any suggestions? Do you have this problem as well (pictures of other's bikes mounted to racks would be great).

This is my first roof mounted carrier (my other is a much more expensive Thule hitch mounted rack, but because I don't have a hitch yet, I'm going to use this in the interim). Admittedly, I didn't have much time to play with the mounting. The Tie Rod's attachment to the crossbars is nice and solid, though because of the design, the rear mounting must be done over, and not between the little rubber underguards on the crossbars. I guess it is possible my fork was not well seated, but I shook the bike and it felt solid when mounted. I could move the rack towards the center of the car, but it would be harder for me to lift the bike into it, and wouldn't leave enough room for my kayak rack!

Anyone else got any pics of their bikes mounted to a fork-mount carrier on the roof? Any ideas?

The lean seems to be the case with every RockyMount product. Not a big deal to me, but I can see it being an issue to some.

I can't get over how sleek the new Tie Rods are, especially compared to the Noose they replaced. I attached the only picture of my Noose SL for comparison.

I have two, the second one was free but was meant for a Yakima, luckily RockyMounts keeps spare parts and I was able to order the base that'll fit the OE bars, $35 for the new base and a matching lock!

EVERY RM product? Do you mean just with the 2010-2011 OB or with ALL cars? I ask because here is the reply I got from RM customer service:

We have seen this on the new Subaru's and few other makes. Unfortunately, that is the design of the factory cross bar. It is secure and we have not had any problems...except that people don't like the way it looks.

Just double check and make sure you have it mounted flush (which it looks like you do).

I'm with Trumpus and the RM guy on this - the OB rack rails are curved and I recall seeing someone with their Yakima or Thule racks complaining about the same thing.

My racks got here today (man that blue is bright - I was hoping for a little darker cobalt action) so I'll take some pictures, hopefully tomorrow when I put them up.

A shim wouldn't work with the Tie Rod and other racks that use 1 bolt to secure the front attachment because the shim would necessitate the outside strap to be longer than the inside. Now if you could design a shim for the top of the crossbar and it's inverse for the bottom of the crossbar - and not compromise tightness/stability - then it would work.

Or just don't worry about it.

I think the aero factory crossbars getbpart of their strength due to their curvature and apparent compression of the center area under load?

I just put my first of two up tonight - took me a while to get it up there. The rear tire holder was a tight fit - took some elbow grease to get it on there. Then I had to battle operator error to get the quick clamp on right so it wouldn't come undone when tightening. My dad always says "ya' gotta be smarter than the...."

So tomorrow I'll get the second one on there now that I know what I'm doing and post pics.

Does anyone know if there's enough room on the roof to get three racks up there?

There should be - just turn it around so the bike points backwards. Getting racks installed is one thing. Then you have the problem of handlebars hitting against each other if they're all facing the same way.


And bugs at highway speeds :17: Our 2 bikes that we drove to various ski towns and such in Colorado and a little Moab, UT are grossly covered with bugs. I wouldn't care but going on a ride and grabbing the brake levers and getting crunchy (and juicy) bug bits is gross. Sometimes they get on the back portions of the seats :gasp:

I'm considering turning both my mounts backwards just to avoid bugs.

I got my racks this week and put them up. After I got over my brain freeze, I was able to have them up in 15 minutes or so.

Putting the bikes on the racks is easy as heck. Drop the fork on, lock the clamp and boom - done.

Yes, mine lean just like everyone else's but there didn't seem to be any issues with it.

Love these things. After seeing how low profile they are, all the Yakimas and Thules on the market just look huge and clunky.

So far I've only seen one other set in Eugene. With so many other OBs here, I'm glad I've got something to set my car apart.
