I've seen this question asked several times, and have not seen a solid answer.

I've heard its just like any other 4EAT but it has slightly different gearing.
That would mean, I think, that you could put in any 4EAT, but then the front pumpkin gearing would not match the rear, you'd have to change the rear gears as well.

Since I might need a trans at some point, I'm hoping a definitive answer emerges.

This is what I have found out with regards to your dilemma..

Open the hood, and look at the transmission from the driver side. You should spot the transmission # from there.

For my 04 Outback H6 (35th anniv. non-vdc) it's a TZ1A4ZMFAA

I got this link in google:

http://www.endwrench.com/oepropdf/remanufactured.pdf which lists what reman'd part numbers you can use for your tranny.

Here's a snippit of the important part (and I'll bold all the 6 cyl versions):

1st column I would presume to be manufacturing date,
2nd column is the actual reman'd tranny part # you would order from Subaru,
3rd column is the notes (and also includes the tranny #, so please double check with what you have).
