Transmission identification

Hi!

My 2000 Outback 5 speed is moaning at freeway speeds & the fluid was metallic last time I changed it. I've discovered some play in the front diff between the front axles, I suspect this is where the problem is.

I was curious if anyone is familiar what to look for as far as compatibility goes. What range of models, years and makes, transmissions will work in a 2000 outback? Were there different 5 speeds in different years (2000-20004) ? Will a forester 5 spd work? I just want to know what to look out for when looking for one.

Thanks

P.S. Its a 2.5L

did you try the JDM importers

locally to LA they might have the best offerings?

______

I guess you could also get a short list off of local craigslists of part outs/ whole cars

like rust buckets driven from places like rural Colorado to UCLA / USC.

("California,
...where there is free edumacation, the ladies wear bikinis in winter, and the cars don't rust, "

....and the 2000-2004 rust buckets really stick out as something to toss when the head gaskets crap out).

@Kitesurfer805 (last online on 2/28/16)

bought a EJ251 off one out there around LA. when he could not find a good candidate for head gasket work locally.

(

(he had started with some EJ20 and then took it back, )

here is the nice pic thread on that

here he is discussing his 2nd EJ251 project,

here he is discussing EJ253

here he is discussing JDM EJ20 with some poor guy in texas who actually put one in:

I don't know if he ever posted a link or mentioned a name though.

________

and outside of you, the only other LA area member I know of is @Glennda5id

__________

however:
googling JDM importers port of long beach, LA, California should yield what you are looking for.

Check out the PDF I attached in post #4 of this thread.

The trans code on my 2000 model 5 speed is TY754CACA which is a 4.111 FD, the local 5 speed for sale is TY754CBDA, which according to that chart is an 01-02 outback and has 3.9 FD.

How accurate this chart is I do not know.

USMB members may have more and better data carts,
( @grossgary is hanging there and has a real pension for such what can go into what swap....or have a source at hand or able to critique that chart.)

possibly on Legacy GT.com

or, Nabisco = Nasioc

_________

maybe your best bet maybe to just buy off Car-part.com yards/ warehouses (there are a few others out there like that too).
