Let me get this straight - you get a code... so you want to replace catalyst?

It sounds to me as if you have no intrinsic knowledge that the cat has failed besides a "code".
  • Have you graphed the operation of the O2 sensors?
  • Is the engine behaving as if the catalyst is plugged?
  • Have you considered there are MANY reasons for a 'code' to be thrown?

I put a magnaflow header/cat on my 3.6R bank 1 a couple years ago without any isues. Still going strong today.

Keep in mind I tested the O2 sensor voltage to ensure the cat was in fact bad. I also fixed the underlying issue (bad vvt solenoid, and coil pack causing intermittent misfire) so that I didn't ruin the new cat.

As others stated, before you shotgun parts at it, simply monitor the O2 voltage to see if the cat is actually bad.

i would check to see if the exhaust header is cracked. Subaru issue a service campaign for 15-16 cars...

I have a custom exhaust with raptor headers and i blew out the seals between header and CAT/ BOOM instant p0420. resealed and no more code.

Aftermarket CATs are far less tolerant of fuel in the exhaust than OEM are...

If you have 0420 cat inefficiency, and intermittent, go with a replacement O2. If you have downstream 02 low voltage, the cat is plugged or you have some serious fuel issues (which will set off their own codes). If you have high voltage, you have a leak. If the rear 02 crossouts are near the same as the front 02, the CAT biscuit blew out the tail pipe.

And what he said above ^^^ aftermarket CATs are touchy. Some are too restrictive. Some the sensors don't like and you will fight intermittent codes. Unfortunately, OEM CATs are very pricey.
