AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT "88 OCTANE" (E15 - 15% ETHANOL GAS)

A number of you may have heard that Sheetz is running a sale on 88 octane. Sheetz 88 (and others) contain 15% ethanol.

THERE IS A LOT OF MISINFORMATION ON THIS TOPIC.

SHORT VERSION

  • Most Outbacks CANNOT run 88 octane.
  • The 2020+ Outback XT and Outback Wilderness can run 88 octane

MOST Subarus SHOULD NOT run 88 octane, because the ethanol content (15%) is too high.

The following Subies can only run UP TO 10% ethanol, and cannot run 88 octane, because it has too much ethanol (up to 15%).
These vehicles should not use more than 10% octane:
  • 2021 WRX (ALSO needs 91+ octane)
  • 2020+ Outback/Legacy NA (2.5i)
  • 2018+ Crosstrek 2.5
  • 2019+ Forester 2.5 Includes Forester Wilderness
  • 2021 STI (ALSO needs 93 octane)
  • MOST older Subarus

BUT...

SOME Subarus CAN run 88 octane:
  • All Subaru Ascents
  • 2020+ Outback/Legacy Turbo
(except when towing - 91+ octane when towing)
    Includes Outback Wilderness

  • 2019+ Crosstrek 2.0
  • 2022+ Forester 2.0

SOME Subarus CAN run 15% ethanol, BUT require higher than 88 octane - these Subies cannot run 88, because the octane rating is too low:
  • 2022 BRZ (93 octane, up to 15% ethanol)
  • 2022 WRX (91+ octane, up to 15% ethanol)

Please refer to the information above, to see if your Subie can run Sheetz (and other) 88 octane gasoline. If your vehicle is NOT in the info above, go to the link, enter your year and model and check your Owner's Manual.

And, please, don't damage your car to save a few bucks.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for you non turbo 2020+'s

ALWAYS check the latest Owner's Manual for the details for your specific trim.

I’ve never come across 88 octane that I can remember. Just 87, 89, 91 (and sometimes 93)
Has anyone else encountered 88 octane fuel (without the 15% ethanol) anywhere other than Sheetz? We ain’t got no sheets in Maine. Just sleeping bags. Lol
I run regular 87 in my 3.6r, happy as a clam.

Kinda like 85 octane and 86 octane, 88 E15 is only available in certain regions.

I live in a state that mandates E15 between Nov15 and April15. I don't have a choice. The governor is petitioning EPA to allow E15 year round.

Nov15-April15 is E15 mix on all octanes. It's has been for as long as I can remember having a drivers license. There was something weird about the laws on how Ohio could have E15 in the pumps, and it could only be there for so long. DeWine petitioned the EPA to lift the regulations to offer the E15 year round as it was cheaper and COVID paychecks happened. 88 E15 is what became of the Governors petition. I'm still on the fence if Sheets Cotton-Candy pop is an aquired taste, or if it's disgusting. lol. Their Fiesta Chicken and Southwest Turkey wraps are awesome! Better than most restaurants.
