Best way to install threaded insert in interior plastic?

What works best to install a threaded insert into interior plastic so that you can then screw in a threaded screw? Jack nut? Some type of rivnut? Looking to install a net or strap over the little cubbies in my Gen 4 to make them useful, and possibly some small hooks or anchors on the flat ledge over under the cargo area glass. Also, how easy is it to pull this plastic piece off to access the rear, and what type of screw on insert would work then that’s a two-piece screw together that creates a screw in anchor point? Thanks!

For putting brass threads in thin plastic.... I reach for a rubber EXPANSION NUT. (aka WELL NUT)

After punch/drill a hole in the plastic...push the EXPANSION NUT into the hole. You now have threads in the plastic.

As you tighten down the screw, the rubber e-x-p-a-n-d-s to grab the rear of the plastic. (DO NOT overtighten!) They hold VERY well.

EXPANSION NUTs can also be used to seal holes in plastic containers.... or when you need vibration-dampening. You can even push an EXPANSION NUT into the end of a pipe and snug down a screw to plug that pipe.

The only 'drawback' is that you need some 'clearance' on the backside for the EXPANSION NUT to do its thing.

EXPANSION NUTs are available at your local Home Depot ==> Everbilt 1/4 in.-20 tpi x 5/8 in. Brass Expansion Nut-814378 - The Home Depot

Again - using EXPANSION NUTs would be perfect for mounting amplifier. (no need to fuss with 'backing up with plywood') The EXPANSION NUTs would also tend to 'rubber mount' your amp. so it is protected from vibration.

EXPANSION NUTs work just fine in thin plastic, or metal. to give you instant brass threads with rubber-mounting built right in.

May I suggest you purchase a single EXPANSION NUT and see how it works by putting a hole in an old milk-container. (any thin plastic/metal) In this way, you will get a better idea how they work.
