Clarification on 2011 2.5l oil capacity

Hey guys this might be a silly question but it got me thinking.

I was skimming through the service repair manual looking for something unrelated and I came across this section for Engine oil capacities.

I see that there is a difference in oil capacity for changing oil with a filter and at overhaul (4.4Qts vs 5.1Qts).

What qualifies as an overhaul?

I fill my oil according to the dip stick, 4.5Qts to bring it to the center of the Full/Low marking. After reading what the service book says it says to fill it to the full mark, which would be the 5Qts.

I am starting to think that I should have been putting in 5Qts every oil change instead of the 4.5Qt.

What do you guys do?

I always put in 4.2-4.5 when changing oil/filter. Check then recheck the next day after driving and it's cooled down.

At overhaul, that would refer to all the oil emptied, when you stop driving and it sits, oil is still trapped in the valve/rocker area, and other oil passages throughout the engine. Just like coolant is always sitting in it. I would only worry about that if you do something like a head gasket job, and you have the engine all apart.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what counted as an overhaul either. Though I always verify the level with the dipstick I guess my only take away is to make sure to full it to the F, not in the middle of the area.

Thanks guys for the info! Hopefully my overthinking will help others in the future. :ROFLMAO:

Very observant. Going by the dipstick is spot on. I have a Legacy and Outback, both 2011 2.5. I now consistently put only 4qt of oil in them (with filter change), because the 4.2 qts would always put me way over the dipstick level, in both cars. I even thought I was reading the dipstick wrong at one point, and confirmed with the service manager. I don't even mess with the 4.2 anymore, just do 4 quarts off the batt. Not sure why this is, both vehicle have over 170k, not sure if that matters.
