RAB Fail with Check Engine Light on

I have a 2020 XT with 1,200 miles. Pulling out of the neighborhood today and I am then met with check engine, RAB off, lane departure light, brake light, eyesight off and seems to be in some sort of a limp mode where the CVT won't allow more torque. Shut off the car waited a minute turned it back on and still have the warnings. Manual is no help. Anyone have any thoughts?

Take a video of what is happening, then after documenting the current condition, disconnect the battery, re-connect it, and see if it clears the glitch (video the after battery restart attempt).

If the car isn't behaving, then call Subaru and arrange to have it towed to the Subaru dealer and get a loaner.

If the car is behaving, call Subaru and arrange to take it to the service department ASAP so that they can pull codes and determine what went wrong.

A vehicle with 1200 miles on the clock with a major electronic failure doesn’t need an amateur attempted fix like messing with the battery.

Take that vehicle in right now to the dealer and let them determine what is wrong and repair. You deserve prompt attention from them and I expect will get it. Don’t try any do it yourself stuff.

I had a similar major failure. Take it in.

I don't disagree with you. Your response is the most sensible. It's still good to document the current state of the vehicle because there's a slight chance that once at the dealer they can't replicate it.

Update, had to get gas and when I started it back up when I got back in the car, all the codes cleared. Thinking back, it seems the car thought there was a transmission issue since some wheels slipped under acceleration (loose salt on the roads) and it must have thrown a code. I will be taking it in however. Thanks for the responses.

I've done my share of donuts and hard driving in snow in the 2020XT, no amount of wheel slip would normally cause those codes.

Is your car on the ECU recall?
Really good guess there!

In some vehicles, the current software may cause the sub learning value control to operate improperly during the wake-up mode of the ECM. This could cause repeated erroneous learning of the accelerator position which can result in the disabling of the VDC function. When the VDC function is disabled, EyeSight, Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB), and Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) auto release functions are disabled by the VDC fail signal causing the VDC, EyeSight, RAB and EPB warning lamps to illuminate.

Update: At the dealer today and it seems to be a real simple fix. I purchased the car in Vermont and their registration stickers are located top center of the windshield. Service tech said anything stuck to the windshield in that location will create issues with the eye-sight and the car will not want to accelerate and will throw codes. Hopefully, this is the cause. Will keep all informed.

Agreed, sticking something at the top center of the windshield should not be done and is asking for trouble with eyesight. I’ve also never seen a registration sticker in that location. In fact in many states sticking something in that location on a windshield is against the law—although probably never enforced.

I am having the same issue with my 2021 Outback 2.5L Limited, the picture doesn't show it but the X-Mode light is flashing as well. Owners manual says it may be an emissions issue and the only thing I noticed is that one of my cohorts decided to mount a I-PASS box in front of where the rear view mirror is inside the glass so I think that might be tripping up the eyesight system. I reposition the I-Pass and nothing has changed, I have also checked the gas cap but nothing is changed with that as well. Dealership here I come is I guess?

I'm not sure if it's miles or time or number of starts but the gas cap thing might not go away until the car does an emissions test again? The one 5 hours after shutoff? The gas cap on mine never tightens very well - I can crank it all I want and it comes off super easily. So far hasn't had the loose gas cap problem but it feels like a bump in the road could loosen it.

Same issue happened to me today. Caused my car to lock up completely. Couldn’t start the car. All warning lights on as described by OP. Fan belt kept on without engine on and battery eventually died. Had to get a jump and then it stayed in limp mode. Finally realized that the national park decal that your supposed to hang on rear view mirror was blocking eyesight. Quite the hot mess for such a simple action.
