Replacing side mirror

Hey everyone!

So I got some great advice on an old thread I made about my side mirror that is broken on my 2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium. I decided it would be easier to do it myself instead of going through insurance. Now, I need to figure out where to buy the part. I have called around to junk yards in my area but so far no luck. Have been looking online but I need to make sure I order the correct part. Here is a picture of my current situation..:1zhelp:

The plastic was hanging so we unscrewed everything and this is what is left over. The actual mirror itself is still in tact. What do I need to buy, and where can I find it online?

Thanks everyone. All of your feedback is greatly appreciated. :D

I just ordered this kit today.

If I had these installed, my right side mirror would have survived a mailbox hit yesterday. These will be nice. BTW, the mailbox sustained zero damage. It was a huge metal box mounted to a tubular steel frame/post.

Surprisingly, I couldn't find a video on replacing mirrors on my 2010 Outback.....I'll see if I can make one when the time comes.

I believe your 2010 Premium is similar to my 2011 Premium, except
that it's not a fold-away mirror. If so, there are 4 parts to the mirror
assembly -- each orderable/replaceable separately:

1) mirror base -- includes motors & wiring with connector

2) mirror glass -- if you need it, get the heated version

3) upper cover -- painted cosmetic front-facing cover

4) lower cover -- black cover below the upper cover

It looks like you need the mirror base -- for sure. To remove it, you'll
have to take off the inside door panel to disconnect the wire harness.
Then pop off the triangular "sail panel" and remove the three screws
holding the broken-off stub of the old mirror base.

The mirror glass (if unbroken) can be popped off of the mirror base
and unplugged from the wire harness (2 simple push-on connectors)
and then reattached to the new base.

Don't know whether your upper/lower covers survived. If you need
to replace the upper cover, you'll have to order the ready-to-paint
part -- they don't come pre-painted.

It's a little tricky to remove the covers and mirror glass from the
remnants of the base, but it just takes a little patience and two
flat-blade screwdrivers (or similar) -- plus a flashlight.

Your photo shows a 5-conductor harness (same as mine) for a
heated mirror with tilt/swivel. I don't know how you'd upgrade
to integrated turn signals without adding extra wires from ???
Same with auto-dimming -- you'd need power for the detector.

You might be able to upgrade to the 2011+ fold-away version
but I'd recommend checking that with a Subaru parts guy.

Try subaruonlineparts.com (or similar). The base unit should
cost about $110 from a dealer or $80-ish online.

good luck,

Looby

you remove the triangular trim piece inside the car, then there are three bolts holding the old mirror assembly in place - unplug the connector and remove those three bolts, then the whole assembly comes off. Take the mirror off of the old assembly (there are four clips - looking at the new one you can see where they are, and they are pushed loose with a flathead screwdriver - you push loose the lower two, then the upper two should act sort of like a hinge as they are hooks, so lift the mirror outwards and up from the bottom once the lower two snaps are released), remove the two connectors for the heater (if you have that) then transfer the mirror over to the new assembly (plug in the two connectors, then snap it into place - slide the upper hooks into place, then push the bottom into place) - then take the new assembly and attach it to the car with the three bolts.

Well, I replaced the mirrors last night, no problems at all. No video being that the mirrors came with specific instructions (pages from the FSM) so it was very straightforward.

Just a few observations to pass along:

1. The three 8mm hex head screws that attach the mirror to the car also have a phillips portion so you can use a screwdriver.

2. The Phillips screws that fasten the door panel to the door....The top one goes into nylon so don't over-tighten. The bottom one (in the door handle) goes into a metal bracket so that one can be snugged up really good.

3. The driver's side mirror (glass) was glued in so it was difficult to pop out. The passenger side was not glued and popped out easily.

So at the end of the day, I now have folding mirrors so I'm really happy about that. Here's the embarrassing part:

I didn't know I had heated mirrors. When I ordered the kit, I specified non-heated. I realized they were heated when I popped the first mirror out and saw two wires attached to it. What's worse is that there's a symbol on the mirror glass itself that shows they're heated.

So I feel like a dumbass, but I'm happy that I was able to do this and not damage anything in the process. :)

Side mirror wiring question

Hi Forum,
Replacing my daughters 2014 Outback passenger side mirror. Have a question about the wiring: there are 6 wires at the mirror: 4 to the wdw mirror motor, two to the mirror heater. At the white connector there are only 5 wires: the pink + gray wire has disappeared in the brown plastic wire harness somewhere. Everything works on this mirror, but the plastic is all smashed. I got a replacement salvage part: the up and down of the salvage mirror does not work. One of the wires was broken. Resoldered and it works now.

SO I have a 2014 heated passenger mirror only, no outer colored shell, no second shell(black): both broken.

did the salvage parts come off a 2013-14 outback?

Not sure, came thru a salvage yard, part was gotten by them for me. Fit fine; it had a broken wire which I fixed. Anyway I am happy to make the old part(which was working) available; but I am not sure it can be salvaged easily: that second black mirror shell defeated me. I could not see getting that off the mirror housing without breaking something/or certainly disconnecting the wiring harness to pull it all apart so as to remove the nut from the pivot post.
