Looks like it worked. Anyway ,here's my first mod on the wife's new outback. Removed grill and disassembled and painted the insert in black metallic instead of the silver metallic it came in from factory. Of course I left the chrome pieces and emblem as was.

Here's a better shot of it in the sunlight.

Looks nice, is it Ok to be envious? I had a Rav4 (traded it for the Outback) that I tricked out like crazy. Can't wait for spring so I can get to work customizing my ride.
Hey, it's all good. What I'd really like to do is fab a single piece black mesh grill along the lines of a T-Rex insert and delete the Subaru emblem altogether. I was entertaining this when I had the grill assy. removed and could picture in my head what it would look like. Too bad no one makes one but I wouldn't really expect them to on a Subaru outback. A single piece done in black would give it a more cobra appearance in the front doing away with all of the horizontal lines of the factory insert. Maybe add a discrete skull and crossbones in one lower corner.......or not. :D ...This is the wife's ride anyway and she gets chest pains at the mere mention of mods on her new ride. I'll need to work on her some more. If anyone here is good at photo shopping the front end of a later model by just blacking out the entire grill area ,that would help to offer a visual as to how it might look. I blacked out the grill area in one of the pics in the outback brochure with a black magic marker and it looked decent.

Here's a pic of the blacked out dealer brochure image I took which offers somewhat of an idea as to what it might look like.

I think that looks pretty darn good. From the pics I like that you left the top chrome part since there's 'chrome' around the windows. IMHO it would look odd to have silver only around the windows.

I did the same thing with my '13 last summer. When I retrofitted my headlights, I blacked them as well. I think it looks great. Good job.

^^ Yea...couldn't tell from the photo. The emblem's blue color is so dark ,I wonder why Subaru just didn't make them black, since it is a more neutral appearance fixture. I can only see that it's blue when I'm right up to the vehicle and that is when I realized that I'd prefer it to be black. Maybe one of these days when I'm feeling it hard enough, I'll modify mine.

I have a good friend in that works for 3M in their machine shop, I've been thinking about shipping him my emblems, front and rear, and see if he can do a 3D billet aluminum plate to replace the factory originals. I'd then just paint the non-recessed areas flat black and call it good. Hmm... time to type a txt :)

Went ahead and joined the ranks of the full black grill rebellion and coated the chrome pieces with plasti dip. At my wife's approval of course......snicker snicker....snort.... I had initially just done the lower surround and slats. The finish of the plasti dip blends well with the surrounding plastic and eliminating the chrome on upper grill makes for a nice break in the chrome that extends from the headlights. Gives the front end a more aggressive look. Lower slats are done in Krylon Fusion enamel. I'm curious to see which of the coatings holds up the best. The wife is also pleased with the outcome, as this is her ride. Next appearance mod may be attacking the chrome tailgate badging with some black.

Need a longer shot of that grille. No offense to the PlastiDip guys, but when I painted over just the OEM chromed part of my grille and left the 'argent' OEM parts, it made it look pretty stock. The lighter color on the inner part of the grille gives it just the right contrast I think.

Roberto12, How tough was it to get the grill out? I had just a few minutes to look at it the other day and it looks like the front bumper/apron over laps the grill. I also have a '14 OB and would like to black it out.

Thanks Jeff

Easy job. Open hood and remove all of the plastic retainers from the air dam on the top side by gently prying up the center tab. Then just grab and pull out. Note the two that retain the air intake scupper are slightly different. Once you remove the intake and top air dam, it will allow access behind the grill assy so you can remove the four Philips head screws that secure the grill housing. They're a little tricky to get to but with the right length screw driver in hand it's not too bad. Once removed you can separate the grill pieces by removing screws that hold it together.
