Another silicone sealant is Permatex® Flowable Silicone Windshield & Glass Sealer, 1.5 OZ

What's good about it is that it's honey-like in consistency so you could apply a layer of it to foam sealant, or use it by itself. It will fill gaps to a maximum of something like 3/16th of an inch. When it dries it's very flexible and is not a strong adhesive or tough so it won't leave anything really stuck. Does not work well if it's subject to abrasion. If you apply it to a crevice it will easily flow into it and firm up.

Does anyone know what plumber's putty is? Seems like it might be ideal for this. Thanks to this thread, I now know where my leak is coming from. Plumber's putty has a very similar consistency to play dough. Note, I searched plumber's putty on Amazon, and a window sealant popped up for RVs as a top result. I'll give it a try with some putty I already have, snap some picks and give an update...

Please give us an update in 6 months or so to confirm it's working!

I don’t think plumber’s putty is the right choice for this- it never really fully cures and stays soft and pliable. I think black silicone is ideal for this as it can still be pealed off even if you need to. The putty will probably hold for good long time, and even if it doesn’t it’s easy to redo. God know it’s better that the original “gauze” Subaru used in there. 😀

Thanks for the instructions, perfectly explained. i dropped the nut! No worries, closed the tailgate and it fell through one of the holes. Thanks again mws4ua !
Awesome! Glad it worked for you!
Since my repair....my wife's Outback had a catastrophic engine failure (which I was likely at fault) and the car needed a new engine. I moved it along. I'm afraid to admit on this forum that after 2 Outbacks.....I have moved on to a Honda CRV....and happily so.
