Transmission compatibility between years / models

SO the CVT on my 13 2.5 outback is about to die for the second time in as many years, and there are very few options for used. That leads me to wonder - does the replacement transmission need to specifically be from a 2.5 outback of the same year, or are there other options for other years in the gen? How about the same year's legacy?

See the thread linked below. It sounds like the answer is yes, and it would be more desirable to go with newer model years (up to '17 legacy sedan) since not only is price lower but mileage of available used units would tend to be lower as well. That said, good luck finding a mechanic willing to install one against what the book says. You could offer in writing to assume all risk.

So in the end I decided not to try a different model - too many unknowns that could turn into issues, it's not worth the saving. However, I did find out a place in town REPAIRS CVTs! Considering the absolute lack of used supply, I decided to go that route. Hopefully this rebuild will outlast the rest of the vehicle.
