Bham Subie--Which transmission do you have on your new Outback?

Is it a MT 4 cylinder or a CVT 4 cylinder?

How can we compare or evaluate your gas mileage if we don't know the details on your Outback's powertrain?

2010 2.5/CVT, 1800 miles - I have been getting 25.2 over the last few hundred miles with a light foot and mostly country driving and some interstate. Not as good as others, but about what I was expecting given the hills we climb every day within 10 miles of my house.

Bham has a CVT, I searched his previous posts ;)

3.6R Limited

Approaching my first 1,000 miles (tonight going home), had 3 fill-ups...

Gas Cubby on the iPhone is showing an average of 21.9 mpg..
The Subaru's trip "computer" is showing 23.5 mpg..

For each fill-up I have noticed the Subaru's computer has calculated the mpg higher, normally about .5 to .7 mpg higher then I do by "hand"... Anyone else notice a difference?

Right Myllari - CVT. I'll have to add it to my profile.

Heyandy - mine reads a bit higher as well than what I calculate by hand. I put +1 mpg in my post above, but its actually varied from +.6 to +1 mpg.

Note - my mpg seems to have improved a bit since upping the tire pressure to 35psi from the 30psi that the dealer had them at.

Just hit 1000 miles today on 2.5 with CVT... average is 27 with probably 60/40 hwy/ city. I wish it gave average speed... My Saturn Sky redline with 300HP/340TQ is average of 30MPG but average speed is 52 at the moment (totally different car tho) !!

2.5 CVT Premium MPG Report

My wife and I did a 650 mile stretch from Portland to Grants Pass, then on to Klamath Falls, then back to Portland. Had 4 adults and our dog in the vehicle for about 1/3rd of the total miles. Average trip computer mileage reported as 31.2. The "hand method" was 30.0 Very good either way.

I did about 700mi in my '10 Outback 2.5i 6MT this weekend. My first tank got 475mi on 16.5gal = 28.8mpg. This was mountain driving from 5500ft to 11k ft, 90% highway >60mph and 10% around town. Im very impressed.

2.5i CVT PZEV - I’m confused. I have about 2500 km on my new OB. While driving for about 2 hours on the highway, I’ve got about 7.2 l/100km average (according to a trip display). It translates into 32 mpg. The average for the entire 2500 km (about 60% in the city) , is about 9.0 l/100km (translates into 26 mpg. Is it possible that OB is the first car I’m driving (after eight new cars I owned in the past), that has better fuel economy then posted manufacturer numbers (22 mpg city and 29mpg hwy)? Or is it something wrong with the car computer?

I think it is correct -- according the Canadian CVT brochure, City 9.5/Hwy 6.9(L/100km). Don't know why in US the numbers are so conservative and people keep getting >30mpg, so I kind of believe Canada numbers.

I have zero interest in CVT and pondering the manual transmission model. how do you feel about engine power during the road trip? Did you test drive the CVT model as well and how did it compare to the MT model?

Also I did some calcs and came up with 3000 rpm for MT model at 80 mph. Is this what you observe in real world?

Thanks in advance,

2.5i CVT

Filled up several times so far and have been consistently getting 24-26mpg as my average between fill ups.

Definitely capable of high 20's to low 30's if driven exclusively on highways while not speeding or being aggressive.

The answer is 28 miles per gallon.

My first experience with Subaru was test driving a 2010 Outback 2.5i Premium CVT. I totally hated it :28: I felt I had limited control of engine power on an already pokey motor. :9:

I waited a few days and then test drove two 6MT Outbacks, one Base 2.5i and one premium 2.5i. Liked the 6MT, located what I wanted, then bought mine a few days later. I now have 1700mi on mine and Im really enjoying it.

The 6MT is AWESOME. I dont know the exact RPM at 80mph, it varies here due to terrain, but I did do 85mph in 3rd gear :)

I havent owned a manual transmission since my 1996 Jeep Wrangler. Ive owned several automatic trucks and suvs since, most recently an 09 Toyota Tacoma. I dont really like shifting but the 6MT+2.5i is the best combination for the 2010 Outback (IMO).

2.5 mt comment

Hi,Creso: Thanks for comments and congrats on your new Suby. How do you feel in light others' feed back about disconnected, rubbery shift-feel? Seems that sentiment is scaring some folks away from that model.
PS: What accessories did you get and price paid? Again, have fun. Darrell.

Road Trip

Took my 2010 2.5 LTD CVT on a work trip from Laurel, Maryland to Cape Canaveral, Florida. Miles on the car was 630 when I left and 1528 when I arrived...

The first leg of the trip was from Maryland to Florence, SC which was 428 miles at an average of 28.6 MPG, the second leg from SC to Florida was 470 miles and an average of 31.0 MPG. This was about 1 mpg less than the car average showed on the dashboard.

Left the house in MD with a full tank and refueled once in Florence on the trip. Each leg used about 15.1 gallons.

I have 2010 Outback Limited w/Navigation, 2.5i, 2500 miles

On a four hundred mile trip I aver. 31.5 MPG (Flat ground, small hills)

Here in the mountains where I live I get 27 to 28 MPG. (Very happy)

I have coasted once with a full tank for 2.5 miles and hit 35.5 MPG. (Briefly) :D

I'm seriously considering buying a new a 2.5 manual Outback. What puzzles me is the official mileage of 19/27 and the mileage being reported here. Why the difference? Are the official figures bogus? Would I see the same thing with other Subarus? Forrester? Legacy? Impreza?

Here's the part number for the fix: C1010AJ100 :D

The manual does run around 3000 RPM at 130 km/h (~77mph?). Seeing the steep final gear ratio, I took it straight to the highway on the first test drive. With the triple-overdrive transmission, it's surprisingly quiet.

I won't pay attention to the fuel economy until I get some miles on it. I like the stats on the centre display, but that gauge on the left side of the cluster is dumb... engine temperature or oil pressure please?
