No Apple iPhone 12/13 USB-C connection

I bought an iPhone 13 yesterday and am very disappointed with Subaru to learn that they are making no provision for the latest Apple charging connection, USB-C (to Lightning).

Both the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13 use USB-C (~20 watts) so the issue is not brand new. My Outback has two USB-A outlets (~ 5 watts).

USB-A will work (I think - haven't tried it yet) but at less than half the charging speed.

I called national Subaru support and they were not terribly interested. Unbelievable.

About 100W. Is fused at 10A but you really don't want to draw that much as the fuse is a P.I.T.A. to replace.

The rear hatch 12V outlet is fused 15A or so, sufficient to run most tire inflators. The one in the dash will blow the fuse with most tire inflators.

Welcome to the world us Android folks have been living in for YEARS! I'm on my THIRD device with a USB-C port for charging (going back 6 years) and I REALLY wish Subaru had one in the current model. I predict it will be part of the mid-cycle refresh and I REALLY hope that part would be interchangeable into the 2020-2022 so it could be retrofitted...

I have a 22, which I think is the mid-cycle refresh, and no USBC.

USB C had slow adoption even on the PC front, so don't expect it soon in cars. Esp. as USB A to C cables are entirely too easy to get, and there's still lots of non-C devices out there.

And, if I may - the thread title implies this is an Apple-only problem. IT ISN'T! As I noted in my first reply, this has been an issue for every Android user since 2018 when Subaru started supporting the vehicle connectivity with smartphones. This problem isn't new just because a new iPhone came out, but I haven't seen threads here of Android users complaining, I guess we just accepted it for what it was. Android users have been dealing with ignorance of USB-C for 4-5 years now, but just because the iPhone now comes with only a cable with USB-C on the end it becomes a "lack of Apple USB-C" problem?

The world revolves around Apple users, didn't you get the memo? But seriously, a USB A to USB C adapter cable works perfectly on my Android phone and it indicates fast charging, albeit not 20 watts. To be candid, people have problems with high charging voltages and simultaneous phone use generating heat. The lower charging amps could be better. If you were using an iPad then yeah you'd want higher charging.

People should charge their phone at home, if they want fast charging. 20w with apple will charge 50%. I use car to top off if needed only.

Well, excu-u-u-use me for not being aware of Android problems! Now that it's almost everybody, why can't Subaru do something, like they should have for Android. My point was that I am annoyed that Subaru wasn't more concerned, and Android makes my annoyance greater. We all need to yell a lot louder. Even if I would never buy an Android...

There is no incompatibility between a USB-A socket and a USB-C device, so sticking with USB-A is a more inclusive choice than going to exclusively USB-C. They could have put one USB-A and one USB-C connector, but they didn't and yelling harder won't help. USB-C will come whether you yell or not, but the timeline isn't dictated by how many people scream and cry about it.

If this is a major issue for you then you should have put that on your checklist before buying the car. I have no sympathy for people who buy a car and then express >outrage< that it doesn't have something that it was never advertised to have.

The time to check for features is before you buy a car, not afterward.

The car USB outlets are not a deal breaker, so it would not have determined buying the car or not. My old Subaru blew a head gasket and blew the radiator apart, so I was stuck and had to get a new car. Still, it would be nice if Subaru listened to their customers (even Android customers). I disagree, it does matter to a business how many people scream and cry.

I know you are talking about iOS but my pixel, also with a type c port, never drains faster than charging when connected to the type A ports. This is true even when using wireless Android auto which is much more power hungry.

I think it's harder for a car company to adapt to the fast changing phone standards but I think Subaru should have included a bunch of type c ports and one or two type a ports.

Almost all my devices except my GPS and my Garmin inreach are not type c. So I have to carry three different sets of cables with me rather than a couple of type c cables.

When I'm on an outdoor photo shoot, I frequently have some combination of my iPhone, laptop, camera battery chargers, SSD backup hard drive, and AA/AAA battery charger plugged in. Sometimes makes me feel like I'm an NSA field station, what with all the cables. Glad my OBW has as many USB ports and 12v sockets as it does -- makes things a lot easier than my last ride.

Sorry, but I do not see the problem. How were you handling the lower wattage charge before you got the new Apple?? Give it a try and I think it should work as needed. If not then you could easily wire in the below listed 25W 5V converter part, Amazon.com, for $12. It could be located in the tray below the two front USB connectors.

LIVISN Auto Vehicle Direct Wire Charger, 12V 24V (8V-40V) to 5V 5A 25W Dual USB Charging Cable, Car Hard Wired Step Down Converter Power Supply for Dash Camera Car DVR GPS

The USB-A port provides sufficient power to maintain and charge a phone. It's not an issue. If your battery is literally at 1% and you need to be at 100% after a 10 minute drive then it's not the car's fault.

I purchased an Anker duo cigarette lighter charger that is USB A and a USB C/PD charge port.

30W through the C and 12W through the A. I use the C to charge my Droid and it's really fast.

I want to alert you to an issue with USB-A to USB-C cables. Not all of them will give maximum power. Some cables have such thin power wires that they create enough resistance to decrease voltage of the connection, so I have a USB voltage tester and it can determine which cables transmit more voltage and amps than others. I throw away all cables that decrease voltage so that I don't use them by mistake. It's similar to this one:

One needn't use a USB-C to Lightning cable to charge an iPhone 12/13. I use a USB-A to Lightning cable in my 2021 and it works just fine. The 12 watts of power provided by the outlets is enough to "trigger" fast charging on my iPhone 12.

This is really a first world problem. Fortunately there are about a thousand solutions that can be at your front door in 24 hours.

Just buy a $10 USB - lightning cable online - Anker makes some really good ones, Amazon has them. I have a 1 foot cable that I just leave plugged in all the time. Handy.

Who doesn't have a bunch of extra cables anyway? Maybe if you don't have teens in the house, but my teens steal mine constantly :)

I think you'll find this is common across all manufacturers. USB-A ports are universal for all devices right now because there are USB-A-USB-C cables, USB-A to lightning cables, etc etc. With Europe mandating USB-C that could change in the future of course.

Few vehicles have USB-C connections. The simple solution is ... a Lightning to USB cable. There's nothing different about the iPhone. It's still a Lightning cable at the phone. The only thing that has changed is that the new phone comes with a different cable. (and no charger) If you want to use an existing Apple charger, you need a different cable...the same one that you'd need in your Subaru. Subaru has provided the necessary power...you need to provide the connection from your personal device.
