OB Zombie Edition: How would you prepare an Outback for the apocalypse?

A couple of years ago the Outback was listed as one of the best vehicles to utilize during the (inevitable?) zombie apocalypse. The OB is spacious, reliable, fuel efficient for it's size, and it has decent ground clearance and AWD.

OB Zombie Apocalypse Edition: What modifications would you make or what accessories would you add to zombie-proof your OB and avoid becoming a meal for the undead?

oooooh... i wanna play!

add heavy duty bumpers for ramming the undead and gates and stuff.

upgrade the tires for better traction.

add a roof basket for stuff like water, fuel storage, spare tires.

additional lights on the basket on all sides.

axe and shovel holder on the basket.

if i had a sun/moon roof, replace the glass with a plate that could be removed so a shooter could clear an area!

add/weld some metal type mesh over the windows with the ability to shoot through it or run a sword through it :)

mount a pair of those cop lights through the wind shield so you could scope out a place.

add a PA system and CB.

add armor underneath.

possibly go with a second battery, too.

yeah... that's what i'd do - lol.

#1 This is silly given any vehicle or machine that depends on fuel to move will be SOL - heck just ask anyone living in New Jersey or NY after the last big Hurricane hit. And in that case there was still fuel being produced.

Start watching the Alaska the last Frontier TV show and learn how to feed your self or learn how to sail and navigate by the stars thats pretty much your Apocalypse option. LOL

The main difference is that most of the people at the gas station competing for gas after the hurricane will now be at the gas station trying to eat you. There'll be plenty of fuel to go around for those who are still alive :29:

While we're thinking about running into zombies, I would weld to reinforce the frame so that it doesn't give as much on impact (collision safety = unsafe zombie mobile). First collision with a zombie at speed and your engine has dropped to the ground (at least per the design of the 4th gens).

The real question is how do you know if its the right octane? Never compromise your standards.
Excellent reason not to use a higher end vehicle that requires premium!

I have to venture SubieSailor and I would have the same plan..

Get to the beach, steal a beautiful sailboat with a desalinator on it, rob a fishing store on the way. Never look back...
How long until you catch a zombie fish? :gasp:

Combine these two.

The turret mounted 50 cal on the tracked OB (oops not an OB) would be the way to go for zombie killin'. Shoot 'em or run them over!
I feel like fuel economy might take a hit haha.

So a Zomie Apocalypse Edition OB would probably include:

- some kind of heavy-duty push bar
- roof basket with shovel/ax attached
- auxiliary lights
- PA system and CB radio
- better tires
- underbody protection

The more I think about it. The more I think a Monster Truck approach might be best. No worry about ramming a zombie if the only thing making contact is tires and no worries about zombies in your window when the only thing to climb is a spinning 4-foot diameter tire.

Not an Outback, but similar(ly ridiculous) in concept:

I've spent an embarrassing amount of time pondering this. You pretty much want to be able to pack enough supplies and fortifications to get you to a forgiving climate with plenty of water. Here's what I'd do to my OB.

1. Reduce weight. All of those interior panels need to go save for HVAC. AC may not last forever but the heater should work for awhile. Pretty much anything that can be removed gets pulled off.
2. Roof rack for fuel, tires, and miscellaneous items that you don't want in the car.
3. Bull Bar/Cow Catcher. Not only do you want to be able to gently push the undead aside but you'll also want to make sure you don't find your self on top of a pile of them.
4. All terrain tires. Goes without saying.

That's pretty much it. You're not raiding Barter Town with Mad Max so really it's just about fuel economy and traction. Once you get to where you're going the goal is to stay put as long as you can. The following items will get you there.

1. Hand tools like Axe, shovel, etc. Don't ram that fence with your reliable means of transportation. Knock it down yourself when the coast is clear.
2. Food and Water. As much of the latter as you can muster. Food will have to be simple canned items that are high in protein and low in prep requirements. Beans and peanut butter are always a good choice.
3. Fuel/Tires/Battery. You'd be better served with a set of inflated tires mounted to the wheels. Bring as many fuel cans as you can. You'll be filling those up just as often as your water jugs. An extra battery or two just to be safe.
4. Propane and propane accessories. Strap a couple of these to your roof so you can cook and warm yourself without having to light a fire.
5. First aid kit. Lots of Tylenol and whatever antibiotics I can get my hands on.

Chances are there will be a run on the grocery stores so I always remind people to hit up the pharmacies instead.

i used to hate zombie stuff but the movie "zombieland" changed that. last summer i had a public speaking class and a girl made most of her speeches about zombies. those speeches really made me laugh and then i found this article Five Best Cars for Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse | U.S. News Best Cars
last year i found out about a zombie run, tickets were sold out so i just watched. this year ill definitely do it

so far this is all i have, i suppose my roof basket is a lot more helpful than i thought.

and also a skid plate on the bottom of the engine/trans

when its paid off i want tube bumpers and an 8,000 lb winch. the last poster makes a great point "Don't ram that fence with your reliable means of transportation. Knock it down yourself when the coast is clear." that winch could help clear a lot of obstacles and not destroy the car. you can't exactly drive through everything like in the movies.
also mighty car mods have a great video
