6 cyls have 4.11 FD ratios. 4 cyl automatic outbacks have 4.444, 4 cyl auto legacies are 4.11.
I have a theory that you can run a 6 cyl. Outback trans in a 4 cyl. legacy without any major issues other than having use the H6 hard lines and relocated filter, or maybe take the filter delete plug off the side of the trans and actually put it back there. Great move for the Legacy crowd as you get a lot more friction area in the clutch packs which can only be a good thing.
I would not recommend going the other direction (running a 4 cyl. legacy trans in a 6 cyl. non VDC outback).
04 MY transmissions are a little different in the way the transfer clutch is controlled, so if you cross that threshold you'll need to swap the transfer clutch solenoid and valve body. Doesn't matter if 4 or 6 cyl, they all changed in that year. . . so if you find an 04 trans and you want to put it in an 01-03, you've gotta swap that valve.
